You’re Losing Deals Before You Even Speak

By Roel Mojico

Sales conviction is often mistaken for product knowledge, objection handling, or a polished presentation. It isn’t. Buyers usually decide how they feel about you before you’ve explained a single slide.

Most sales leaders think better scripts drive results, so they tweak decks, proposals, and closing tactics.

But top salespeople don’t try to convince; they project certainty that shapes the conversation before logic does.

That’s where deals are won or lost.

Why Sales Conviction Is Felt Before It’s Heard

Every sales conversation begins with an invisible evaluation.

Prospects aren’t only assessing your solution. They’re assessing you.

  • Do you sound certain?
  • Do you sound like someone who has solved this problem many times before?
  • Or do you sound like someone hoping they’ll say yes?

People are remarkably good at sensing hesitation. It appears in rushed explanations, defensive responses, unnecessary details, and the subtle pressure to earn approval.

Ironically, the more someone needs the sale, the harder they work to prove themselves. That effort creates tension that the buyer immediately feels.

You create that tension, you lose the deal.

So, how do you build a strong sales conviction?

Strong sales teams don’t just tell people to “be confident.” Instead, they focus on building habits that naturally create that confidence over time.

  1. Belief Before Technique: Start by asking yourself: Do you truly believe in what you’re selling?
  2. Detachment From The Outcome: When you feel like every conversation has to end in a sale, your behaviour changes.
  3. Consistency Under Pressure: Practice staying calm. Trust your process. Pause, listen, and respond thoughtfully.

The Close Isn’t Where Confidence Begins

When you’re genuinely certain, buyers feel guided, not sold to, and everything gets easier.
